What should you look out for when choosing an office or gaming chair?
Buying a new gaming chair is often a rather huge investment. Therefore, it is highly advisable for someone to do research before finally choosing a brand to purchase from. This blog post can be used as a guide for purchasing not just a gaming chair but rather, any chair you would use for work or leisure.
Despite the rather harmless look of a gaming chair, this piece of furniture is a rather complex object made up of many parts of vastly differing qualities. To help break this down, I will be talking about each part briefly starting from the bottom of the chair and moving upwards.
I will also be posting about each component of the chair in more detail in the future.
The first component of a gaming chair I will be talking about is also one of the most crucial in ensuring the longevity of the chair. The wheels are the key component in determining the weight limit of the chair.
As a rule of thumb, the bigger the wheel, the more weight it is able to hold.
The wheels on a gaming chair often come in different sizes ranging from 50mm all the way up to 75mm. The design of the wheels will also differ from brand to brand but this is purely personal preference.
Personally, I would recommend getting a gaming chair with wheels that are above 60mm. This should provide your gaming chair with enough support to higher weight and last longer.
Another concern that you may have is the wheels scratching your marble or wood flooring. Most wheels are made out of nylon and PU. Therefore, rolling it against fragile surfaces may not be advised, as long-term usage may cost damage to the floor surfaces.
Rubber wheels can be bought from Royale Ergonomics to reduce the chances of this happening. Please contact us to purchase these rubber wheels (S$20).
The base plays an important role in the overall structural integrity of the gaming chair. It also comes in various materials and design. Mainly, nylon and aluminum alloy. Aluminum alloy is definitely the better choice of material here, giving you a more sturdy and luxurious feeling. Once again, the design of the base is up to your personal preference.
This simple contraption facilitates the up and down movement of the chair. The hydraulics lift can be categorized into different Classes (1 to 4), with Class 4 being the best. Although a Class 3 gas lift would probably do a good enough job in this category, I would recommend you to get a gaming chair which sports a Class 4 gas lift, just like the ones in our King Series.
Mechanism & Recliner
These components are the brains of the entire gaming chair. Depending on the variation, it will control the various functions that the gaming chair is able to perform. The multi-functional one found on the King Series will be able to perform the following functions:
- Moving the chair up and down
- Enable rocking movement back and forth
- Control magnitude of rocking
- Lock the rocking mechanism
One of the main draws to a gaming chair its ability to recline to a certain, usually extreme, degree. Most gaming chairs on the market will be able to recline up to 155 degrees. Before purchasing your gaming chair, you should check with the seller on the level in which it is able to recline until. I would recommend sticking to the maximum recline of 155 degrees as anything beyond that increases the risk of the entire gaming chair tipping over.
The basic function of an armrest is rather simple. It is to ensure that your arms are comfortable during long hours of gaming or working. The armrest on gaming chairs can come in different forms, 2D, 3D or 4D. The D, in this case, refers to directions.
The armrest on Royale Ergonomics’ chairs are 4D. This means it is able to move 4 directs to ensure that you are able to find the optimal position for comfort. The four directions are:
- Up and down
- Left and right
- Forward and backward
- Tilt left or right
This part of gaming chairs has the most significant impact when it comes to the longevity of the gaming chair. We have all heard horror stories of gaming chairs peeling, flaking and discoloring despite only being purchased 1 or 2 years ago.
A common misconception on gaming chair peeling, humidity and sweat
A common misconception regarding this is that the sole reason behind this is due to the humidity and sweat. However, even in the ever so humid and hot Singapore, it is still very much possible for the upholstery of the chair to last beyond just 2 years.
Much like everything else on the chair and most materials on the market, PU leather, fabric, and genuine leather all have varying grades.
Given that a higher grade of PU was to be used on gaming chairs, the probability of the gaming chair lasting more than 2 years will be significantly higher. For example, automotive-grade PU is being used on our King Series chair, which will easily last you 5 years without peeling issues.
Apart from the quality of upholstery, the choice of material is also equally important. Each material has its own pros and cons (look out for an upcoming blog post regarding this) and it comes down to personal preference.
The ergonomics of the gaming chair is often used by gaming chair companies to market their products. However, you must pay more attention to this aspect of the gaming chair and not be misled.
The generic lumbar support and headrest often do not help with the overall ergonomics of the gaming chair. Instead, the odd shape of the lumbar support and headrest might actually be detrimental to your posture.
At Royale Ergonomics, we co-developed our lumbar support with Transcal PTE LTD to ensure that our gaming chairs are actually ergonomic. The lumbar support – which is backed by studies approved by the UK government – will definitely aid you in having proper posture during the long-term.
You’re invited to come down to our showroom at 11 Recreation Lane, 546563 to try out our lumbar support. You can feel the difference between generic lumbar supports versus one that is a result of intense research and thought put into it.
- Customization might be something you are looking for when getting a gaming chair. Having invested in something so extravagant, having an input on how you want the chair to look and feel like may be important to you. At Royale Ergonomic, you have a huge say in how your chair will finally turn out to be. Firstly, you’ll get to choose the material and the colours of the materials. Price is definitely one of the main considerations when buying a gaming chair. Gaming chairs have gotten a very bad reputation over the years being known as over-priced pieces of furniture. However, this does not always have to be the case. Depending on the brand of gaming chair you get. your chair could possibly be one of the best investments you can get.
