What is the best material for an office & gaming chair?
This is one of the most common questions I get when customers engage us to reupholster their gaming chair or plan to purchase an office and gaming chair from Royale. Unfortunately, there is no one right answer to this question. The best material for your gaming chair ultimately comes down to your needs and personal preferences. In this article, I will be breaking down the advantages and disadvantages of each material as upholstery for a gaming chair.
Before we begin, it is important to understand that for materials used for upholstery in gaming chairs or anything for a matter of fact (Napa leather, Faux Leather or Fabric), there are varying grades. Much like any other materials, the same material used for a gaming chair can have differing levels of quality. For example, all the materials used for Royale’s office and gaming chairs are of automotive-grade. The implication of being automotive-grade is long-lasting durability. Cars seats and upholstery are often the most used and abused items we possess. We bake them under the scorching sun for days and subject them to a tremendous amount of abrasion by entering and leaving the car multiple times a day. Despite all these wear and tear, we too expect them to last for an extremely long time. Our materials have gone a series of testing under ISO standards to ensure the durability and quality of what an automotive-grade material encapsulates. With over 25 years of experience in the automotive upholstery businesses and supplying the majority of parallel imported cars in Singapore, you can rest assure that the material used is top quality.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, companies can also be using low-quality upholstery materials. Taking the example of PU leather, a common material used for gaming chairs, can come in extremely differing qualities. If the PU leather used in your gaming chair is of extremely low quality, you will experience the black winter in sunny Singapore. The PU leather of your gaming chair might start peeling and flaking after a short span of one to two years. Although this can be partly attributed to the heat and humidity of Singapore, this is not the only reason. The quality of PU leather will affect the lifespan of the gaming chair significantly, allowing it to have no peeling issues far beyond 2 years. At Royale, we are so confident of our PU leather that we offer a 5-year peel free guarantee.
The characteristics of Napa Leather is soft, smooth and full-grain. Napa Leather is typically the most expensive upholstery option available for gaming chairs at Royale Ergonomics and other gaming chair companies. The reason behind its high price tag is due to Napa Leather often being considered one of the more luxurious materials. Other than being luxurious, there are also a couple of advantages of using Napa Leather as your choice of upholstery for a gaming chair. Most of the advantages of Napa Leather stems from it being genuine cowhide leather. Compared to Faux Leather, Napa Leather is more breathable. This means that Napa Leather as an upholstery option on a gaming chair is often more cooling to sit on for long periods when compared to Faux Leather.
We would recommend the Napa Leather upholstery for customers who are looking for something more luxurious. If you are someone who appreciates great leather or someone who loves the smell of a new car, Napa Leather is definitely the go-to option for you.
Similar to Napa leather, Cowhide leather possesses similar properties to Napa leather but has a slightly more rugged texture. This type of leather is what we usually associated leather to be, with visible grains. However, it is important to note that while different in texture, genuine cowhide leather retains the important property of low heat retention and better breathability, similar to NAPA leather.
We believe that this upholstery option for our gaming chairs is the ultimate compromise between Price & Quality. Priced at S$649, customers are now able to enjoy the premium feeling of genuine leather at a $150 lower price point compared to Napa Leather
Faux Leather can refer to a range of materials. The main purpose of Faux Leather is to imitate how genuine leather look and feel. The two most popular forms of Faux Leather used in gaming chairs are PU Leather and PVC leather. The main advantage of using Faux Leather is its price. At Royale Ergonomics, the price of our Faux Leather Poseidon Series office & gaming chairs is about 2/3 the price of our Napa Leather Poseidon Series. A tangible disadvantage of Faux Leather would be its breathability as it is not as breathable as genuine cowhide leather or Napa.
I would recommend Faux Leather as an upholstery option for gaming chairs to individuals who are on a tighter budget. The faux leather used at Royale Ergonomics is automotive-grade. Therefore, you do not have to worry about it being exposed to abnormal amounts of discoloration or peeling. Just like the iPhone 11, it has just the right amount of everything.
Last but not least, we have fabric as an upholstery option for gaming chairs. There are tons of advantages of going with the fabric for your gaming chair. Firstly, it is the most breathable material. This material will provide you the most relief from the heat during long hours of sitting in your gaming chair. However, if you are someone who is prone to sweating, your sweat will permeate into the fabric. Over a long period of time, it may cause the fabric to start smelling.
For pet owners (especially cats owners), the fabric is definitely the best material for your gaming chair. Despite not being scratch-proof, the material is still the most durable against scratches. Other materials such as Faux Leather or Napa Leather will have visible marks if pets were to claw the gaming chair.
I hope that after reading this article, you will be able to make a more informed choice when choosing the material for your gaming chair.
